Ambitious Vision. Measurable Results

Johnson Controls continues to take significant climate action and has committed to achieving net zero scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 2040, ten years ahead of the goal set out in the Paris Climate Agreement. By 2030, the company aims to cut its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 55 percent and is currently ahead of schedule, having already achieved a reduction of more than 43 percent from a 2017 baseline. It also aims to reduce scope 3 emissions from Use of Sold Products by 16 percent and has already exceeded this goal, having reduced emissions by 27 percent from a 2017 baseline. These ambitious 2030 emissions reduction targets have been approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Transitioning to Low-GWP Refrigerant

The passage of the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act as part of the 2020 COVID stimulus bill gave the EPA formal authority to regulate substances based on their global warming potential (GWP). The AIM Act directs the EPA to phase down U.S. hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and use by approximately 85% over the next 15 years.

The High-Level Commission on Carbon Pricing and Competitiveness

Endorsed by Johnson Controls, this commission comprising CEOs and senior executives from leading global companies, as well as former high-level government officials and representatives from academiaœcalls on industry peers and governments to adopt strong carbon pricing policies. Learn more

Copenhagen Communique

Since the UN negotiations in Bali in 2007 The Corporate Climate Communiqués have set out a concise business case for an ambitious, robust, effective and equitable UN climate framework. They have offered a progressive global consensus on the shape of an international agreement and on the national policy that is needed for countries to deliver on the global goal.

Three Percent Club

Launched at the UN Climate Action Summit on 23 September 2019 in New York, the Three Percent Club is a new coalition of businesses including Johnson Controls, countries and international organizations committed to driving a three percent global increase in energy efficiency each year - a move that can help limit climate change and increase global prosperity. It builds on International Energy Agency (IEA) research showing that the right efficiency policies could deliver over 40 per cent of the emissions cuts needed to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, without requiring new technology. EP100 Cooling Challenge

Johnson Controls was the first US company to commit to the EP100 energy efficiency commitment. We are leading by example on efficient cooling across our own operations and are joining businesses around the world who are challenged to cool their operations in the most energy efficient ways possible through a new initiative launched in September 2019 by international non-profit The Climate Group in partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy. Global Alliance for Energy Productivity

We endorse the Global Alliance for Energy Productivity goal to double global energy productivity. To help reach this goal, we will: Commit to using our sphere of influence to improve energy productivity within our business, organization, community, state/province, or nation; Share solutions, success stories, and progress with other leaders in energy productivity; and Encourage other organizations, businesses, and government entities around the world to endorse the Global Alliance goal.

Alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Responsible Corporate Engagement in Climate Policy

The "Responsible Corporate Engagement in Climate Policy" initiative aims at making sure companies' engagement on climate policy is comprehensive, aligned, and transparent by asking companies to commit to adhering to a set of best practice steps to more effectively support a 1,5/2° trajectory.

Department of Energy Better Buildings Plants Challenge

We have committed to reduce energy intensity by 25 percent by 2028 compared to a 2018 baseline. Johnson Controls received the 2017 Better Practice Award for establishing a company-wide Energy Hunt program as part of the Johnson Controls Manufacturing System that resulted in a threefold increase in identified energy savings projects and helped the company meet its Better Plants Challenge goal three years early.
